What is gray divorce?

On Behalf of | Feb 19, 2025 | Divorce |

The phrase “gray divorce” is defined as a breakup in a long-term marriage that happens after the spouses reach the age of 50. These couples opt to part ways in their twilight years after being married for decades. Often, these breakups align with significant life transitions like retirement or empty nesting.

While the divorce rate is steadily decreasing for younger couples, those who are 50 and older have seen the divorce rate increase by 100% since 1990. Couples who are 65 or older have seen the divorce rate triple in this timeframe.

Why is gray divorce on the rise?

One of the reasons that the divorce rate among older couples is higher than ever is because it is more accepted than it used to be. The secularization of society has resulted in marriage being seen as a social contract rather than a sacrament. Couples are increasingly opting to exchange vows in homes or other unconventional settings instead of traditional churches. Additional factors contributing to the increase in gray divorce include:

  • Longer life expectancy. With individuals living longer lives, many are hesitant to spend their elderly years in an unsatisfactory marriage.
  • Women are more independent than they were in past decades. They have college degrees and fulfilling careers. Being financially independent, they don’t need a man or partner to care for them.
  • Empty Nest Syndrome. When children leave home, spouses may discover that they have grown apart and no longer have shared interests.

While gray divorce may be more accepted, it is not easy. Divorce presents many challenges for older couples, including financial hardship caused by the loss of retirement benefits such as pensions, 401(k)s and IRAs. Also, unlike younger couples, older people are more likely to have health problems, which may make it harder for one partner to get health insurance, particularly if they have pre-existing diseases. For these reasons, you are encouraged to seek assistance if you are facing a gray divorce.
