Children’s healthcare and coparenting after divorce

In even the best situations, divorce is a complicated process that introduces family members to a new reality. While many divorcees in Wisconsin think about moving, visitation schedules for children, and other facets, healthcare is often overlooked. Knowing how to navigate the healthcare of children impacted by divorce is a crucial aspect of co-parenting.

Health insurance

One of the most important decisions that parents who divorce must make involves which one provides health insurance for the kids. If both parents provide insurance for the children, one plan is primary while the other is secondary. However, if only one parent provides health insurance, the cost of that insurance will play a role in any child support orders from the court.

Out of pocket expenses

No matter how good an insurance policy is, co-pays and other out-of-pocket medical expenses are part of the equation. Generally speaking, divorced parents split these costs equally, ensuring that one partner isn’t solely responsible for healthcare costs. However, one parent typically pays the cost at the time of care, and the other provides reimbursement for 50% of the cost.

Caring for the children at home

Depending on the health issue, children often require additional care once they get home. In those cases, parents must decide how each of them will care for the child. In those times, communication is key. Each parent should be careful to keep the other parent aware of what’s going on. Additionally, each home should have adequate medical supplies needed by the children.

In the best scenarios, parents commit to working together for the good of their children. This includes providing adequate healthcare for children who cannot care for themselves. Be sure to incorporate medical care in your written co-parenting plan.
